!छत्रपति संभाजी महाराज!! छत्रपती शिवरायांच्या मृत्यूनंतर स्वराज्य टिकवण्यासाठी, वाढवण्यासाठी अंतर्गत कलहाशी व शत्रूशी समर्थपणे व प्राणपणाने लढणारे धर्मवीर! मृत्यूचे आव्हान पेलुनी, तोच वारसा आम्हाला दिला। शिवरायांचा शंभू छावा, हिंदू म्हणुनी अमर जाहला।। वरील दोन ओळींतच खर्‍या अर्थाने संभाजी महाराज यांच्या चरित्राने स्वराज्याला दिलेला महान असा स्वराष्ट्रवाद, स्वधर्माभिमान व्यक्त होतो. संभाजीराजांचा जन्म छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांच्या पहिल्या पत्नी सईबाई यांच्या पोटी जेष्ठ शु. १२, शके १५७९ रोजी पुरंदर गडावर झाला. ते केवळ २ वर्षांचे असतानाच त्यांच्या मातोश्रींना देवाज्ञा झाली. अशा प्रकारे लहानपणापासून त्यांच्यावर काळाच्या आघाताला सुरूवात झाली. सईबाईंच्या पश्र्चात राजमाता जिजाबाई शंभूराजांच्या पालनपोषणाची सर्व व्यवस्था पाहू लागल्या. केशव भट आणि उमाजी पंडित हे शंभूराजांचे गुरू होते. संभाजीराजांना कोणकोणते शिक्षण दिले गेले हे सभासद व चिटणीसांच्या बखरीतून मोठ्या प्रमाणावर स्पष्ट होते. ''संभाजीराजांनी विद्याभ्यास करावा, त्याला सुशिक्षित करावे म्हणून त्याला घोड्यावर बसविणे, शास्त्रविद्या, तालीम यांचे शिक्षण देवविले. अष्टप्रधान यात राजपुत्राची गणना आहे. सर्व आमात्य राजाचा वामभुज; युवराज, राजपुत्र हा सत्यभुज असे आहे. त्याअर्थी तो सुशिक्षित असावा म्हणून लेखनादि अभ्यास करविला. दंडनिती, राजधर्म हे सांगविले. राजपुत्र धर्म, पितृसेवा कायावाचामने करावी. पित्याने संतुष्ट होऊन युवराजपद कारभार सांगितला असा गर्वारुढ उत्पन्न होऊ नये. राजाचे कुळी अनीतिमान पुत्र निर्माण झाला म्हणजे ते राज्य व कुल शीघ्र क्षयास जाते. म्हणुन बहुत नीतिने रक्षिणे तसे रक्षिले. आणि मातबर सरकारकून प्रौढ यांच्यापाशी बसावे, दरबारात बसावे म्हणजे कारभार माहित होत जाईल.'' अशी नोंद ऐतिहासिक कागदपत्रांत आढळते. अशा प्रकारे संभाजीराजांचे औपचारिक आणि अनौपचारिक शिक्षण झाले. याचबरोबर सैन्याचे नेतृत्व करण्याचा अनुभव त्यांना मिळावा या हेतूने त्यांना छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराज स्वत:बरोबर एखाद्या आघाडीवर नेत असत किंवा पाच-दहा हजार सैन्याचे नेतृत्व त्यांना देत असत. संभाजीराजांची अतिशय काटेकोर पद्धतीने जडणघडण होत गेली. याच दरम्यान त्यांच्या जडणघडणीच्या काळात त्यांना खूप मोठा अनुभव मिळाला. हा अनुभव होता छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांबरोबरील आग्रा भेटीचा. या काळात महाराजांच्या सहवासात त्यांच्या अनेक पैलुंचा, गुणांचा संभाजीराजांवर नकळतपणे प्रभाव पडत गेला. वेगळ्या अशा राजकारणी धोरणांची, मुत्सद्दीपणाची त्यांना ओळख झाली. छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांच्या अद्भूत, अचाट साहसाचे ते साक्षीदार होते. त्यानंतरच्या काळात वेशांतर करून स्वराज्यात दाखल होईपर्यंत त्यांना प्रत्यक्ष समाज पाहता आला. हा अनुभव त्यांना पुढे राज्यकारभार चालविण्यासाठी खूप उपयोगी पडला. मिर्झाराजांकडे ओलीस राहणे, शाही फर्मान स्वीकारणे या गोष्टी देखील त्यांना दिशादर्शक ठरल्या. खूप लहान वयातच शत्रूचा सहवास त्यांना दीर्घकाळ लाभल्यामुळे त्यांची कार्यपद्धती त्यांना अनुभवता आली. विद्याभ्यास, शस्त्रविद्या, दरबारातील कारभार, युद्धविद्या, सैन्याचे नेतृत्व या सर्व गोष्टीत संभाजी राजे पारंगत तर होतच होते. त्याबरोबरच त्यांचे संस्कृत व हिंदी या भाषांवरही प्रभुत्व होते. त्यांनी ४ काव्यग्रंथ लिहिले आहेत. त्यांच्या बुधभूषण या संस्कृत ग्रंथात दोन अध्याय असून पहिल्या अध्यायात 'स्वकुल' व 'स्वकाव्य वर्णन' या विषयीचे लेखन आढळते तर दुसर्‍या अध्यायात 'राजनिती' व 'दुर्ग निरूपण' या विषयीची सविस्तर माहिती संभाजी महाराजांनी लिहिलेली आढळते. शिवराज्याभिषेकानंतर त्यांनी अनेक मोहिमांवर नेतृत्व केले. पण खर्‍या अर्थाने छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांच्या मृत्यूनंतरच संभाजीमहाराज लोकांना कळाले. छत्रपतींचा वारसदार हा तेवढाच कार्यकुशल व पराक्रमी आहे हे त्यांनी प्रत्येक बाबतीत सिद्ध केले. केवळ ९ वर्षांच्या काळात त्यांनी १२८ लढाया जिंकून आपल्या पित्याच्या नावाला खूप मोठा सन्मान प्राप्त करून दिला. याच काळात कोकणात धर्माच्या नावाखाली हैदोस घालणार्‍या धर्मांध लोकांचा त्यांनी बंदोबंस्त केला. गोवा येथेही पोर्तुगिजांवर हल्ला केला. या स्वारीच्या वेळी त्यांनी स्वत:च्या जीवाची पर्वा न करता खाडीमध्येच घोडा घालून आदर्श नेतृत्त्व सिद्ध केले. धर्मांतरित लोकांना पुन्हा हिंदू धर्मात घेऊन त्यांनी शिवाजी महाराजांचे कार्य सुरू ठेवले. सततच्या स्वार्‍यांमुळे त्यांनी औरंगजेबाच्या नाकीनऊ आणले होते. त्यामुळेच तो चिडून दक्षिणेत आला होता. आक्रमक सेनानी व कुशल प्रशासक म्हणून त्यांनी राज्यकारभार फार कुशलतेने सांभाळला व उत्तमपणे शासनव्यवस्था सांभाळली. छत्रपती संभाजी महाराजांची मुद्रा पुढीलप्रमाणे होती, श्री शंभो: शिवजातस्य मुद्रा द्यौरिव राजते। यदंकसेविनी लेखा वर्तते कस्य नोपरि।। आपल्या कारकीर्दीत छत्रपती संभाजी महाराजांना अतिशय विषम अशा परिस्थितीस सातत्याने तोंड द्यावे लागले. अनुभवी औरंगजेब सुमारे सात लाख सैन्यासह स्वराज्यावर चालून आला होता, आणि तरुण, अननुभवी संभाजी राजांकडे सैन्य होते केवळ तीस ते पस्तीस हजार. शिवाय घरभेदी, फितूर लोकांच्या कारवाया होत्याच. पण या सर्व परिस्थितीतही छत्रपती संभाजी राजांनी मोगली सैन्याला दाद दिली नाही, औरंगजेबाला यश लाभले नाही. पण फितुरांमुळे संभाजीराजे शत्रुच्या ताब्यात सापडले. १६८९ मध्ये संभाजी राजे विशाळगडाकडून रायगडाकडे जाताना संगमेश्र्वर येथे मुक्कामी थांबले होते. फितुरांकडून बातमी मिळाल्यानंतर मुखर्रबखान या मोगली सरदाराने त्यांना ताब्यात घेतले. औरंगाजेबाने त्यांना तुळापूर येथे आणले. तेथे त्यांच्यावर धर्म बदलण्यासाठी दबाव आणण्यात आला. त्यांच्या देहाचे हाल करण्यात आले. औरंगजेबाने या प्रसंगी क्रौर्याची परिसीमा गाठली. पण छत्रपती संभाजी महाराजांनी धर्मपरिवर्तनास होकार दिला नाही. धर्मासाठी, मुख्य म्हणजे स्वराज्यासाठी त्यांनी स्वत:चे बलिदान दिले. पुणे जिल्ह्यातील वढू (बु.) येथे छत्रपती संभाजी महाराजांची समाधी आहे. त्यांच्या समाधीचे दर्शन घेताना कोण्या एका कवीने सहजपणे उद्गार काढले आहेत, कविराजकुशल, राजकार्यधुरंधर हा सिंहाचा छावा, पिढ्यापिढ्यांना देत प्रेरणा घेई येथे विसावा -- GANESH BANDAL +91 99222 81811
